In the context of the novel, I found her believable, though I thought Doc deserved better. The whole idea of a dentist ending up as a gambler and gunslinger in the Wild West is such a huge stretch--but it's what actually happened, so I was able to suspend belief on most anything else, especially when Russell writes so beautifully.
